Top 10 Expensive Hotels

Most expensive hotels in the world with lavish opulence and an oasis of calm with space and silence providing the utmost in luxury.

Top 10 Most Expensive Hotels:

No 10. Hotel Meurice
Belle Etoile Suite $7,300 per night.
The most expensive Parisian hotel room is the Belle Etoile Suite at the Hotel Meurice, located on the Rue de Rivoli. The penthouse suite is reached via private elevator, where it opens onto a marble entry hall. The entire suite is decorated in a Charles X style - heavy drapery, intricate wood paneling with gilt edges, chandeliers and murals.

No 9. The Ciragan Palace Hotel Kempinski
Sultan's Suite $7,500 per night
The Ciragan Palace Hotel Kempinski in Istanbul, located along the Bosporus, was originally the home of the last Ottoman sultans, and different incarnations of the property have been built (and torn down) since the 16th century. The building was bought by the Kempinski hotel group in 1986 and underwent a renovation in 1991. Today, the hotel comprises two structures (the actual palace and the new hotel), and the Sultan's Suite is the most expensive room there.

No 8. Regent Beverly Wilshire
Penthouse Suite $7,500 per night
The Regent Beverly Wilshire is the grande dame of L.A. hotels and happens to be the same age as the Academy Awards. Located on the 14th floor of the Beverly Wing, the 5,000-square-foot Penthouse Suite features three bedrooms, a wraparound balcony, a formal dining room, living room, kitchen and den, and is decorated with contemporary furniture. The master bathroom has floor-to-ceiling windows, two glass-enclosed showers, remote control toilet/bidet with a heated seat ...

No 7. The Fairmont Hotel
Penthouse Suite $10,000 per night
The 6,000-square-foot Penthouse Suite at the Fairmont Hotel on San Francisco's Nob Hill takes up the entire eighth floor of the hotel and has three bedrooms, a dining room that holds 50 people, an eat-in kitchen and a two-story, domed library with a ceiling painted with the constellations. There is also a billiards room covered floor-to-ceiling in Persian tiles, and four fireplaces inlaid with lapis lazuli. The bathroom fixtures are made of 24 karat gold, and a secret passageway is concealed behind the bookshelves on the library's second floor.

No 6. Hotel Cala di Volpe
Presidential Suite $13,879 per night
The Costa Smeralda ("Emerald Coast"), on the eastern coast of Sardinia, became famous during the 1960s when the Aga Khan bought it and convinced his jet-set friends to start building villas and a yacht club on the beautiful but previously undeveloped island. The coast also served as the backdrop to the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me.
The split-level Presidential Suite has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and two sitting rooms. The highlight is the private, outdoor saltwater pool on the second floor. The style is rustic but luxurious, with whitewashed walls, exposed beams, thick down cushions and wooden accents. The bed frames are wrought iron, and the tiles are hand-painted ceramic. The suite also has its own gazebo and solarium, as well as a DVD library and Bang & Olufsen stereos.

No 5. Westin Excelsior
Villa La Cupola $14,950 per night
Rome's "Villa La Cupola" suite within the Westin Excelsior has all things Roman and excessive - a cupola, a Pompeii-style Jacuzzi pool, frescoes and stained glass windows. Located on the fifth and sixth floor underneath the cupola of the hotel (which was made famous by Fellini's movies), the suite covers 6,099 square feet and has an additional 1,808 square feet of balconies and terraces. While it only has two bedrooms, five more can be joined to it.
The stained glass windows in the living room detail allegories of a mythological figure paired with a modern one, such as Atlas and Television, Hypnosis and Neurosis, Hermes and Marketing, and Hermaphrodite and Fashion. The downstairs also has a private kitchen, and the dining room features an antique Murano glass chandelier, a private wine cabinet and an antique mosaic-tile-covered dining room.
What really makes this suite over the top is a private cinema with Dolby surround sound. Such luxury makes even the private elevator that leads up to the fitness area and Jacuzzi - complete with mosaic floors, vaulted ceilings and frescoes - seem ordinary. The painted horizons on the frescoes were designed to match perfectly with the real Roman one.

No 4. The Plaza Hotel
Presidential Suite $15,000 per night
The 7,802-square-foot suite covers nearly the entire 18th floor of the Plaza, with views overlooking Central Park. The walls are covered in silk, the reception area has a 10-foot-wide stained glass window and the hand-painted piano depicts scenes from the French countryside.
The suite has five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, two living rooms, a dining room, powder room and sauna. There are also three marble fireplaces, a terrace and a 2,000-bottle wine cellar (guests are charged extra for indulging). The Presidential Suite also comes with the use of a secretary/butler and the Plaza's chefs are at your disposal.

No 3. The Martinez Hotel
Presidential Suite $18,500 per night
The Martinez Hotel in Cannes likes superlatives and bills itself as having the biggest, most expensive and only terraced penthouse suite on the Cote d'Azur. Perhaps some of this is Gallic swagger, but the price of the suites certainly makes them one of the most expensive in Europe. Both penthouse suites are 8,000 square feet and are decorated in the hotel's signature Art Deco style, with streamlined furniture, silk curtains and teak parquet floors.
While many of the hotel's rooms are painted in bright colors (peach, lime green), the penthouse suites are decorated in muted, understated tones (brown, cream and tan). Each suite has two bedrooms, a Turkish bath, kitchen, personal sauna and views of the Lerins Islands as well as the entire Bay of Cannes. The wraparound terrace is 2,000 square feet and can comfortably hold 100 people. It also has a Jacuzzi. Technophiles will appreciate the Bose plasma screen televisions and telephones and the DVD library. A private butler is on call 24 hours a day, and other amenities include use of a limousine, open bar and the option to join both suites into one grand apartment.

No 2. President Wilson Hotel
The Imperial Suite $23,300 per night
At the sleek, modern President Wilson Hotel in Geneva, security takes as much precedence as luxury. Faster than you can say "Frette linens," the hotel's staff reassures guests that the security in the Imperial Suite is among the best in the world, ideal for celebrities or traveling heads of states who visit the United Nations headquarters next door at the Palais Wilson.
The Imperial Suite, which takes up the entire top floor of the hotel, is reached via a private elevator and has four bedrooms, all of which overlook Lake Geneva. The suite is decorated in a contemporary style, with marble and hardwood floors, and the bay windows overlook Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc. Off of the master bedroom is a dressing room as well as a study, and the suite has five bathrooms, all with mosaic marble floor, and a Jacuzzi and steam bath in the main bath. The living room has a billiards table, a library and a cocktail lounge with a view of the water fountain, and can accommodate 40 people. The dining room seats 26 people around an oval mahogany table. For the security-conscious or merely the paranoid, the Imperial Suite is also equipped with bulletproof windows and doors.

No 1. The Atlantis
Atlantis Bridge Suite $25,000 per night
The Atlantis Bridge Suite has the distinction of being the most expensive hotel suite in the world - a whopping $25,000 a night. Found on Paradise Island, Bahamas. The Bridge Suite is located on top of a bridge that connects the two Royal Towers buildings, so it overlooks the entire resort and marina.
The ten-room suite is decorated in red, black and gold (lots of gold) and comes with its own butler, bar lounge and entertainment center as well as 12-foot ceilings. The master bedroom has a sitting area, his-and-hers closets, and hand-painted linens. The bathrooms have chaise lounges, marble baths, and dolphin fixtures. For those who are picky about their personal space, there are two separate master bathrooms. The kitchen also has its own entrance so the butler or cook never bothers you. So, do you feel like spending $25,000 for one night?

10 Most Disturbing Animals

Star Nosed Mole
One of the most intriguing stars in the universe is right here on Earth: the eleven pairs of pink fleshy appendages ringing the snout of the star-nosed mole (Condylura cristata). From its appearance and location, one would think this star might be a supersensitive olfactory organ, helping the nearly blind mole negotiate its subterranean environment, or an extra hand for grasping prey or manipulating objects. Some researchers have hypothesized that the star detects electric fields, thus acting as a kind of antenna. But in reality, the star is an extraordinary touch organ with more than 25,000 minute sensory receptors, called Eimer’s organs, with which this hamster-sized mole feels its way around.

Snake Fish
In 2002, the snakefish (or Channidae) was described as “something from a bad horror movie” by US Interior Secretary Gale Norton. Some describe snakefish as having ”a voracious appetite, often consuming all other fish in a lake or pond and even eating its young. It can slither across land, staying out of water for up to three days, to find new sources of food.” Norton also warns that once on land ”snakeheads can eat almost any small animal in its path…. They have even attacked people in China who got too close to snakeheads’ egg nesting areas.” According to Wikipedia, snakefish can be up to over a metre in length and over 6 kilograms in weight. Most snakefish are 2-3 feet long. They’re also fast reproducers with no natural enemies outside of their native environments. Within their native environments, small snakefish are preyed upon by bigger fish, while full-grown snakefish are consumed by crocodiles and alligators. Because of their ability to move into new habitats and wipe out local ecosystems (and to then hop out of the water and mosey on over to another body of water and repeat the process) snakefish have been prohibited in 13 American states and other countries (e.g., Australia).

Gumprecht's Green Pit Viper
This striking bright green snake, commonly known as Gumprecht's green pit viper, is found in the Southeast Asian region of Greater Mekong.
The serpent, which has the formal name Trimeresurus gumprechti, was first described by scientists in 2002, although he doesn't look like he appreciates having been discovered.

Giant leaf-tailed Gecko
The Giant leaf-tailed gecko (Uroplatus fimbriatus) is endemic to Madagascar and the islands Nosy Bohara and Nosy Mangabe. These geckos live in tropical rain forests and reach a total length of 330 mm. A large nocturnal gecko, by day it plasters it self to a small tree trunk and rests head down. If disturbed it will raise it tail and head, open its mouth and scream... and call his mom.

Kerivoula Kachinensis
Another of the species found in one of the world's last scientifically unexplored regions, Asia's Greater Mekong, the Kerivoula Kachinensis is one of the most disturbing bats ever found.

Giant Isopod
This Predator look-alike is a Giant Isopod (Bathynomus giganteus), a carnivorous crustacean that spends its time scavenging the deep ocean floor, up to 6,000ft down on the seabed where there is no light. In the pitch black and cold, they survive by feasting on dead and decaying fish and other marine animals.
Frilled lizard
The frilled lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingi) is a yellowish-brown australian lizard has got a large frill of skin to the sides of the neck and throat. It is about 90 cm/35 in long, and when is angry or alarmed, it erects its frill, which may be as much as 25cm/10 in in diameter, thus giving itself the appearance of being larger than it really is. Frilled lizards are generally tree-living but may spend some time on the ground, where they run with their forelimbs in the air.
Desert Mole Rat
The Desert Mole Rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is a burrowing rodent native to parts of East Africa notable for its eusocial lifestyle, nearly unique among mammals, and for a highly unusual set of physical traits that enables it to thrive in a harsh, underground environment, including a lack of pain sensation in its skin, and a nearly cold-blooded metabolism. Plus, it is horrible.
Aye Aye
Considered by locals as a harbinger of misfortune, the Aye-aye is one of the world’s most rare and bizarre looking primates. To the Malagasy people, the aye-aye is magical, and believed to bring death to the village it appears in; therefore they’re often killed on sight. The aye-aye is the world’s largest nocturnal primate with an average head and body length of 16 inches (40 centimeters), a long bushy tail of 2 feet (61 centimeters) long, and weighs about 4 pounds (2 kilos). The Aye-aye has large beady eyes, black hair, and large spoon-shaped ears. It has 5-fingered hands with flat nails, with a middle finger up to 3 times the length of the others.

Top 10 Assassination Attempts

10. Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson would become the first (and only US President) to personally beat the crap out of their would-be assassin. On January 30, 1835, President Jackson was attending the funeral of a South Carolina Representative when Richard Lawrence made his move. Lawrence fired two pistols at Jackson both misfired then the President charged at the man and began to beat him with his cane. It took several aides to restrain the 67-year-old Commander in Chief while Davey Crockett apprehended Lawrence.

Richard Lawrence was later declared not guilty by insanity and spent the rest of his life in the Government Hospital for the Insane. John Hinckley Jr would be housed here under it’s present name St. Elizabeths Hospital. (See #9)

9. Ronald Reagan

Upon watching the movie Taxi Driver approximately 15 times a man named John Hinckley Jr. became enamored with actress Jodie Foster. After several “rejections” on Foster’s part, Hinckley decided to kill the President of the United States. On March 30, 1981 Hinckley traveled to the Washington Hilton Hotel where Reagan was speaking that day. After Reagan had finished his speech and was about to drive away in his limousine six shots were fired.

One hit Press Secretary James Brady, another struck Washington DC officer Thomas Delahaney, and another hit Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy. Two others hit the limousine and one ricocheted off the door of the limo traveling under Reagan’s left armpit. Many didn’t realize that the President had indeed been shot as he was shoved into the limo and driven away.

While his intended victim was rushed to the hospital Hinckley asked the police if the Academy Awards would be canceled that night, they were postponed until the next night. Reagan asked his surgeon if he was a republican, ironically Dr Joesph Giordano was a liberal democrat but proclaimed “we are all Republicans today.”

James Brady sustained the most damage from the attack, the bullet had hit his head and he was permanently disabled from the shot. The Brady Bill is named after him that carried a variety of gun control laws. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect the insanity defense was severely scrutinized and rewritten. As of December 2007 Hinckley has never regretted shooting the president claiming it “the greatest love offering in the history of the world.”

8. Adolf Hitler

The attempts on Hilter’s life are many and the July 20th Plot of 1944 is probably the most famous of attempts on Hitler’s life, it was also probably the closest to achieving its goal. The one chosen to attack Hitler was Claus von Stauffenberg. Stauffenberg was in command of the German Reserve Army; he had close personal access to Hitler and he often advised him militarily along with other top Nazi’s

On July 20th, Stauffenberg entered the conference room in Rastenburg, Germany. He planted the device at 12:10 hours and excused himself from the room. The bomb went off at 12:40 hours and Adolf Hitler escaped from the attack with only minor injuries. Stauffenberg fled to Rangsdorff Airport while the rest of the coconspirators were in panic. At 19:00 hours that night he and several others were captured. They were flown to Bendlerblock, Germany’s military headquarters and found guilty of high treason. Claus von Stauffenberg was shot at 1:00 hours on July 21, 1944. Some several hundred others were found guilty in mock trials over the next few months.

This story has been made into several films the newest of which is called Valkyire. It caused controversy in Germany over using Tom Cruise, a Scientologist in the lead role of a national hero. Bryan Singer of X-Men and The Usual Suspects fame is directing it.

7. V.I. Lenin

On August 30, 1918, Fanya Kaplan fired three shots at Vladimir Lenin after he finished a speech in a Moscow factory and was getting into his car. One bullet hit his shoulder and another entered his jaw, the third passed through his coat. The shots rendered him unconscious. Lenin was rushed to his Kremlin apartment and when he regained consciousness he refused to go to the hospital paranoid that he would be finished off there.

Kaplan was captured by the Cheka (the predecessor to the KGB) and issued this statement:

My name is Fanya Kaplan. Today I shot at Lenin. I did it on my own. I will not say from whom I obtained my revolver. I will give no details. I had resolved to kill Lenin long ago. I consider him a traitor to the Revolution. I was exiled to Akatui for participating in an assassination attempt against a Tsarist official in Kiev. I spent 11 years at hard labour. After the Revolution, I was freed. I favoured the Constituent Assembly and am still for it.

When Kaplan refused to give up any other co-conspirators she was executed on September 3, 1918. Lenin carried the bullet in his neck until the day he died.

6. Viktor Yushchenko

Viktor Yushchenko, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine announced his bid to run for President on the Independent ticket in 2004 against incumbent Viktor Yanukovych. In early September of 2004 Yushchenko was flown to Vienna, Austria and was diagnosed with “acute pancreatitis” due to “a serious viral infection and chemical substances that are not normally found in food products.” He was also plagued with jaundice and bloated pockmarks; after seeing his visage on television Dutch toxicologist Bram Brouwer contacted the Vienna hospital and told them to test for Dioxin. It was concluded that Yushchenko’s condition was indeed from “high concentrations of Dioxin,” with concentration measures about 1,000 times normal in the human body.

Some toxicologists claim that he had to have been poisoned at least 3-14 days before his admission. Yushchenko claims that he was poisoned at a dinner with the head of the Security Service of Ukraine that had occurred the night before his admission. Given the high levels of Dioxin in his blood work other toxicologists agree that this may have been the initial contact.

Top 10 Oscar Winning Movies

10. Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) : A truly sweet and heartwarming drama about a custody battle between two adults. Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep deliver astounding emotional performances that were as real as they can get. Great dialogue and very believable everyday life events, a classic in every sense of the word, one of Hoffman’s best roles in his career.

9. Titanic (1997) : The highest grossing film of all time, Titanic also cost the most to date at $200 million. Many thought this would be its downfall, a historical story translated into Hollywood terms with special effects. James Cameron, as only he can do , directed a fantastic tale of a peasant boy played by Leo DiCaprio and his romance with the daughter of rich folk (Kate Winslet) whose romance was outlawed in the midst of the worst ship disaster ever. Good performances throughout, very believable action scenes as the ship sinks, heart-wrenching to see the people perish in the disaster. A great cinematic achievement.

8. The Sting (1973) : A funny and witty con man comedy starring the now infamous duo of Robert Redford and Paul Newman in this movie about a con of a lifetime at the racetrack. There is great chemistry between the two actors, one of the best in cinematic history, the two also buddied up in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. A real feel good of a movie that’s very enjoyable even 30 years later.

7. Rain Man (1988) : In this Barry Levinson film, Dustin Hoffman steals the show again in yet again another best actor role alongside Tom Cruise in a story about a man (Cruise) who is informed he has a brother who is autistic and the journey to find the love he has for him. Hoffman portrays Raymond to perfection, the film is touching and the acting is superb.

6. Forrest Gump (1994) : I admit I love this movie even though in hindsight I think Shawshank Redemption should have won that year. Tom Hanks winsbest actor for the second year in a row for his portrayal of Forrest Gump, a simple man from Alabama who is not the smartest person, the movie follows him through extraordinary eras in our lifetime, from Vietnam, to ping pong championships, to his historic cross country running, Forrest keeps it simple and focuses on his childhood love Jenny, a love that carried him through strenuous times in his life. An instant classic and a very rewarding picture.

5. The Godfather (1972) : Francis Ford Coppola’s Masterpiece and the beginning of a saga, The Godfather ranks #1 among all viewers on The Internet Movie Database. A gem of a movie which focuses on the organized crime family the Corleones. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino play the Godfather and his son Michael, the heir to the title and their dealings with the other families. A sad, tragic story about crime and how it affects everyone involved, legendary acting, great music that will last a lifetime and beautiful scenery solidify this movie as one of the best ever made.

4. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) : Set in a mental institution, this movie focuses on a man deemed insane but is very sane most of the time, just crazy at times. Jack Nicholson delivers a /stirring account of McMurphy as the movie focuses on life in a mental institution and the desire to be set free. A real tear-jerker and one of the best cast performances I have ever seen. Good music to fit the mood and great dialogue.

3. The Godfather II (1974) : As great as The Godfather was, I thought the sequel was more entertaining, not to mention it had Robert De Niro, one of my favorite actors play Vito Corleone, Michael’s Dad, as a youngster in New York and how he claimed the title of Godfather. I like the way the movie went back and forth from the early days of Vito to the current days of Michael as the Godfather, again very similar to the first movie but a slight nod to this one as the better of the 2.

2. Braveheart (1995) : Mel Gibson masterpiece Epic story of William Wallace, a peasant Scot who led an uprising against the heavily armed Brits in th 14th century, very inspiring tale of the underdog stepping up and challenging the bully. Sad tale full of great characters, acting, score and cinematography, very symbolic scenes and very memorable quotes throughout. It boasts one of the most realistic battle scenes ever to be captured on film. A movie for the ages.

1. Schindler’s List (1993) : Steven Spielberg’s defining moment to his career was a movie very difficult for him to make due to his heritage. This epic tale of a German man who dedicated his life to saving jews from the concentration camps in Germany during WWII. A very difficult movie to watch but one that has to be watched, it is shot in black and white and has a documentary feel to it. Incredible performances by Liam Neeson as Schindler and Ben Kingsley plays Itzhak Stern, Schindler’s accountant and a Jew himself. The movie has horrific crimes by the Nazis depicted in very graphic detail and you are not human if you don’t find yourself teary-eyed after seeing this. This epic earned Spielberg his first Oscar as Director and Picture, well deserved, my #1 best movie that won Best Picture
